Born to a financially unstable family, I thought I was destined to die poor. I used to think that there was no chance for me to become a successful person. Growing up, my folks would often say: ‘’those who are rich are very bad people, that’s why we choose to be poor’’. I used to think that they were right because of the way they pictured wealthy people. Of course in our neighborhood, there were some rich people who were mean to those of lower classes. It was my people’s excuse to live in their comfort zone.
That was until I watched: ‘’the Pursuit of Happyness’’. Will Smith who starred as Chris Gardner in the movie told his son: ‘’Don’t ever let somebody tell you, you can’t do something. Not even me. Alright? People can’t do something themselves, they wanna tell you, you can’t do it. If you want something, go get it. Period’’. That was his advice to his youngster. It was the most incredible piece of advice I heard a parent giving his offspring during my early days. That was the kind of father I wanted. Unfortunately, I grew up with the idea that I had to settle for less.
I was almost drowned in the river of mediocrity but few days after the movie, something began to dawn on me. There was a kind of determination and purpose that I had never experienced before. I could relate, there were things I longed for, dreams I wanted to accomplish but my environment would say it was crazy and impossible. Seeing the way Chris Gardner resisted to give in to despair, I knew I could do anything I wanted even though it was crystal clear that the road to success might not be easy. I understood that when you have a big dream with a drive and you focus on working hard and smart, everything is possible even when it takes time.
I started thinking about the things that I wanted. I began to set goals and making plans to reach them. It taught me that the road to success is not straight and when you really want something, you have to work hard towards achieving it. There is no room for despair and you must never give up. I realized that the very difference between most rich people and those who are financially poor is that the first never give up no matter the circumstance and even when they fall, they always get back to their feet and keep on moving forward. Today, I can say with certainty that anyone can succeed if they have a dream and are determined to make it true. It is not going to be easy. Nobody said it would but eventually we get what we want. Remember, you too can become great.
